Hey everybody, I hope you are having an awesome day. So I recently had the pleasure of being interviewed on Catholic TV’s This is the Day, and they asked me this question.
What is the number one misconception when it comes to weight loss? And I thought I would share my answer with you here, because you probably want to know what the number one misconception in weight loss is. And I believe the number one misconception in weight loss is that we turn to a diet first. The better question to ask ourselves is, hey, what’s really holding me back?
And if what’s holding you back isn’t knowing what to eat, then a diet would totally help. So, if you already do know what to eat, but find it’s hard to follow through, then a diet isn’t the answer to your weight loss struggles. So I’d like to give you some examples from the women in our community who do want to lose weight and they do know what to eat, but they found that other things were holding them back.
So I’m going to tell you a few stories about women in our community, and I will not use their real names. Okay, So first let me tell you about Christy. Christy was a stay at home mom, and she had two children, and she had found that she knew what to eat during the day, but had fallen into a few habits that weren’t working well for her. And you may have experienced these yourselves. When she was cleaning up dinner, she would find that she would be eating off the kids plates. It was sort of an autopilot behavior for her, but once she got into our program and we dove into why it was so hard for her to just scrape the plates, she found that she had a belief that she was wasting food. And so you see what was really holding back her weight loss in this area was not only the habit of eating the kids food off their plates, the hand to mouth habit, but also this belief that she’s wasting her family’s resources by scraping the plates. She addressed both and what’s amazing is she is now so proud to say, and I say this in quotes, that she is not a human garbage can. And the benefits of that and some of her other work, and I will tell you she has worked very hard on speaking kindly to herself and also addressing her emotions instead of eating her emotions. And she’s even lost a few pants sizes. And in her words is speaking kindly to herself for the first time in her life. Isn’t that beautiful? Diets can’t do that for you. My second example is Sherry. And Sherry knew what to eat during the day and would have no problem throughout the day except found that she was running to fast food restaurants when her daughter was in dance class and she was sitting in her car. Once she became aware of this, she started to problem solve some ideas and in the end she made a very simple decision to just go home. She said, there’s a few things that I can get done during that time at my house, which in her words, was just around the corner, which eliminated that temptation of going to all the fast food restaurants. Another mom, Emily, came on a group coaching call one day and she said that she drives her kids a half hour to school, which is apparently a very chaotic drive, stopping to get fast food or a coffee or something that just she didn’t feel really great about. And then drives home. As we started to investigate what was really behind that it was the whole concept of I needed something for me. And it was something for her to look forward to. So what we decided to do was to give her permission to do whatever she wanted at that 30 minute mark when she dropped off her kid at school. That would be fine as long as she felt intentional about it. And you guys remember our two food rules in our community is that you eat food you love and that includes drinks and that you feel good about it. And she wasn’t feeling good about the impulse of it. So we can plan it so that she does feel good about it. And the way that you feel good about it is you just decide what you will feel good about. Maybe you feel good having a sugary coffee drink two times a week, but not five days a week, and on the other days you would just get a plain coffee, or maybe you would get a breakfast sandwich, or egg bites, or something that you felt good about. The other thing that we noticed in Emily’s life was that she didn’t have a get out the door routine that worked. The only tool that she’d been implementing was the rush and the yell and the rush and the yell and the rush and the yell. And we all know that rushing and yelling and rushing and yelling does nothing to speed up the process. All it does is add intensity and chaos. And so we talked about ways for that to be a more calm process for her and how she could train her kids into that. And so I hope these are just a couple specific instances of what is really holding back people’s weight loss. And it’s not knowing what to eat. It’s these instances in life that we’ve just got into habits and we haven’t solved for them. We haven’t created a new way. Or it can be we just don’t know. How to do it differently when we want to dive into ice cream when we have a fight with our husband or our kids are throwing tantrums. Or we’re so stressed out from work. See, those are the things that we give our attention to and learn to solve for and learn to work through so that we can calmly handle them and not need to turn to food to survive them. And I hope these are just a couple examples for you that you can give yourself a break in realizing that a diet will not help you in your weight loss struggles because a diet will not give you the tools and skills necessary to overcome what’s really holding up your weight loss. Okay, so those are specific instances, but I also want to tell you about chaos behaviors and in our community we identify chaos behaviors, which are essentially the behaviors that cause us to eat Impulsively or eat food that we’d later regret. So for me in general, I don’t feel good when I’m Acting with my chaos behaviors, and I don’t have a plan that’s super strict every day. Sometimes it’s just a loose plan, but I know when I’m eating something impulsively that I wouldn’t have planned. That doesn’t feel good and that feels like chaos. Eating standing, getting seconds, sometimes feels like chaos. Eating during preparing a meal, and you all have done this. You have all eaten half of your dinner while you’re making dinner, and then you sit down to eat dinner, and you’re thinking, I’m not even hungry anymore. And that was chaotic behavior for me. So eating food while I’m preparing it, or like our friend who is eating off other people’s plates while she is cleaning up. And then anytime I’m eating fast, I know I’m in chaos behavior. And again, chaos behaviors are just a set of behaviors that we identify, sort of habits that we individually have gotten into, where we know we’re not in the calmest state to eat. And chaos behaviors is just one tool that we use to help us identify the behaviors that cause chaos. So that then we can transform them and develop a calm eating plan, which is honestly just the opposite of your chaos eating. So for me, my calm eating plan is to eat, seated, slowly, food that’s prepared for me on a plate. It can be that simple. And that way I know I’m not eating while I’m standing, I’m not eating while I’m preparing, I’m not eating while I’m cleaning up, I’m not eating off other people’s plates, it’s food that’s prepared for me. So I hope this helps you understand why a diet is not your solution to losing weight. Instead the better question to ask yourself is, what’s really holding up my weight loss?
